Chronic Superficial Keratitis (Pannus) or German Shepherd Eye

This eye condition is most common in the German Shepherd Dog, but can be found in other large herding breeds.

It is a condition where the body is attacking it’s own cells and is aggravated by UV rays in sunlight as well as arid and windy conditions.

Though there is no cure, treatment with antibiotics and immune suppressants can slow down the spread of  the condition.

If you notice any clouding of the eye or a reddish spot near the edge of the iris take your dog to the vet asap as success of treatments rely on the early treatment of the condition.

And while it does lead to blindness, treatment slows the progression as well as keeping the dog out of direct sunlight and the use of eye protection like Doggles.
